How to master Dream Feeding

 

Dream feeding, often hailed as a saviour by many sleep-deprived parents, is a technique that involves feeding your baby while they're still asleep. It has become popular, especially for babies who struggle with long stretches of sleep at night and is something I commonly recommend to the families I work with, although it is also worth noting that Dream Feeding does not suit every single child. 

 

The Benefits of Dream Feeding are:

 

Extended Sleep Periods

One of the most significant advantages of dream feeding is that it can help babies sleep for longer stretches at night. By gently rousing your baby just enough to feed them without fully waking them, you may encourage them to sleep through longer intervals, giving both you and your little one more restful nights.

 

Reduced Night-time Waking

Dream feeding can contribute to reducing the frequency of night-time waking episodes. By offering a feeding session during a lighter sleep phase, babies might be less inclined to wake up hungry in the middle of the night, leading to more uninterrupted sleep for everyone.

 

Improved Feeding Patterns

For babies who struggle with feeding during the day due to distractions or fussiness, dream feeding can ensure they receive adequate sustenance. This technique allows them to consume a substantial amount of milk or formula during the night, contributing to their overall feeding and growth patterns.

Dream feeding provides a quiet, intimate moment for you and your baby. It's a chance to connect during the peaceful hours of the night, fostering a sense of security and closeness between parent and child.

 

How to Master Dream Feeding

 

1.      Choose the Right Time:  Aim to dream feed your baby when they are in a deep sleep but not too deeply asleep that they won't latch or swallow. Typically we recommend late in the evening around 10.30pm which tends to suit most parents. 

 

2. Create a Calm Environment:  Keep the room dimly lit and minimise noise during dream feeding sessions. This helps maintain a peaceful atmosphere that encourages your baby to stay relaxed and sleepy.

 

3. Gentle Wake-Up:  Approach your baby gently, avoiding sudden movements or loud noises that could startle them awake. Use soft touches and soothing voices to ease them into a semi-awake state for feeding.

 

4.  Feed in a Semi-Upright Position:  Position your baby slightly upright during dream feeding to reduce the risk of reflux or discomfort. This can also make it easier for them to swallow and digest their milk or formula.

 

5. Burp Afterwards:  Don't forget to burp your baby after dream feeding to release any trapped air and prevent discomfort or colic. If you skip this step, you're likely to be met by a very upset (and awake) baby a short time later.

 

6. Nappy Changes:  Unless your baby needs a nappy change, don’t do one.  If their nappy is full then complete the nappy change either before the feed or in the middle of the feed.  Use a very dim night light to see what you are doing but don’t interact and avoid waking them fully.
