Survival tips and tricks after a horrendous night with your little one
As new parents, we have all been there - a restless night with a fussy baby who just will not settle because of illness, teething, regressions … or sometimes unknown reasons.
Sleep deprivation can make the following day feel like an uphill battle, but fear not! With a few survival tips and tricks, you can make it through the day. This too shall pass….
1. Managing Naps
Allow them. If you have had an earlier than usual start, bring the first nap forward by 30 minutes or so and let them sleep for the usual amount of time, or slightly longer and if they're still tired make the middle of the day nap the longest.
As cliché as it may sound, taking a nap when your baby sleeps can be a game-changer. Use those precious moments of your baby's naptime to catch up on some much-needed rest (if possible). Let the washing wait and the dishes stay in the sink - your well-being is just as important as any household chore.
2. Lie in or get up?
You might not like the response to this question but definitely keep your morning routine as similar as you can (with the exception of point 1) including morning wake up time. By lying in until later in the morning you will disrupt their routine. Bringing naps earlier, allowing longer naps or adding in an extra catnap are all more effective ways to see you through the day.
3. What to do with baby when they are awake?
Engage in calming activities that promote relaxation for both you and your baby. Soft music, gentle baby massages, or even a warm bath can create a soothing atmosphere. Creating a calming environment can help your baby feel more at ease and improve their chances of having a good, restorative nap.
Getting outdoors can work wonders for both you and your baby. Take a leisurely walk in the park or simply spend time in the garden. Fresh air and sunlight can help boost your mood and regulate your baby's internal clock, which will help with better sleep.
4. Taking care of YOU
When faced with sleep deprivation, it is crucial to prioritise self-care. Take short breaks throughout the day, even if it is just a few minutes to breathe and relax. Accept help from friends or family if they offer, and do not hesitate to ask for it if needed. Remember, you can better care for your baby when you are well-rested and emotionally supported.
On days following a rough night, simplify your daily routine to conserve energy and reduce stress. Prepare easy-to-make meals, opt for simple activities with your baby, and focus on essential tasks. Embrace the concept of "good enough" instead of aiming for perfection. This flexibility will help you navigate the day with less pressure and more ease.
In the midst of dealing with sleep deprivation, it is easy to forget to take care of yourself. Remember to drink plenty of water and eat nourishing meals. Avoid excessive caffeine or sugar, as they can lead to energy crashes later in the day. Opt for healthy snacks and meals that provide sustained energy.
